Rootin' Tootin' Robots - 2020

Game Jam

Rootin' Tootin' Robots is the project we did for the 3rd Gran Citm Game Jam. The theme of the edition was "paradox", which was a very challenging theme to come up with an idea for. Eventually we decided to make a game where you had to kill yourself in order to win, as a base idea. That then evolved into our final concept: a game where you have differently colored robots and have to kill them in a specific order. The paradox is that in order to win, to enter a win state, you have to die, which is the common lose state of a majority of games.

RT Robots was developed in about a day and a half, entirely in Unity. Every asset was made by our team (that's why the game looks so goofy). I was in charge of the level design, drawing concepts of every level in graph paper and then moving them to the game using the tools that the programmers developed. I tried to make it so that levels taught you the different game mechanics little by little, so that nothing needs to be explicitly explained to the player. The first level is just to learn the main win condition, the second one teaches that you control all robots at once, then the next one forces the player to kill one robot first (if not, the other one becomes impossible to kill), then the fourth one introduces different color orders, etc. This is related to my article on Shadow of the Colossus' way of teaching mechanics.
